Intel to Invest $20 Billion to Build Two Chip Plants in Arizona
With the global chip shortage continuing to be front and center, Intel will ramp up its advanced chip manufacturing capacity by spending $20 billion to build two factories in Arizona.

Intel will not only use those factories to make its own chips but also provide capacity for outside customers. It plans to establish a new standalone business called Intel Foundry Services, dedicated to manufacturing chips designed by other semiconductor companies.

The announcement suggests that Intel will continue to focus on manufacturing. The company is one of the few semiconductor companies that both designs and manufactures its own chips. Its strategy is opposite to industry shifts that have led competitors to increasingly separate chip design and chip fabrication.

The news comes during a global chip shortage that has hampered industries from automobiles to electronics and concerns that the US is lagging behind its rivals in semiconductor manufacturing.

“Intel is and will remain a leading developer of process technology, a major manufacturer of semiconductors, and the leading provider of silicon globally,” CEO Pat Gelsinger said.

Gelsinger said the new factories will focus on cutting-edge computing chip manufacturing, instead of the older technologies that some manufacturers specialize in.

“Intel’s investment will help to preserve US technology innovation and leadership, strengthen US economic and national security, and protect and grow thousands of high-tech, high-wage American jobs,” US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo said in a statement.
