Intel, a US-based tech innovation leader, and United Microelectronics Corporation, one of Taiwan’s leading global semiconductor foundry companies, issued a joint statement on January 25, 2024, announcing plans to formally “collaborate on the development of a 12-nanometer semiconductor process platform.”

In order to reach this goal, the partnership will play to the “complementary strengths” of each company.

Intel will contribute three fabs at its Ocotillo Technology Fabrication site in Arizona — where the process node will be developed and manufactured — as well as its valuable “experience in FinFET transistor design,” while UMC will bring its expertise in “process leadership” and “providing foundry services.”

Both companies believe that their combined knowledge and capabilities will create not only a product that benefits customers in “high-growth markets such as mobile, communication infrastructure and networking” but also a fruitful collaboration that effectively diversifies semiconductor supply chains.

Commenting on this newly inked deal with UMC, Stuart Penn, Intel’s senior vice president and general manager of Intel Foundry Services, has said that this “strategic collaboration” and its projected outcomes demonstrate his company’s commitment to partnering with “innovative companies in Taiwan…to help better serve global customers.”

Additionally, Penn has stated that the partnership represents a crucial step toward Intel “becoming the world’s second largest foundry by 2030.”

Among the most significant benefits are UMC gaining “an added Western footprint” to help broaden its “addressable market” as well as the company being able to demonstrate “its leading process technology R&D” in order to accelerate its “development roadmap.”
