In Taichung, a group of Indonesian immigrants are working together to clean up the city and challenge the idea that immigrants do not care about their community.

Led by Pindy, a 34-year-old woman who came to Taiwan eight years ago, the group of around 30 volunteers have been meeting on the first Sunday of every month to clean up the city.

The group also reminds tourists and locals not to litter or sit on the grass.

“Southeast Asians also like to keep their environment clean and tidy,” said Pindy, who has been working hard to change the way Indonesians are seen in her community.

“We were very surprised and grateful for the help from the Indonesian group improving the environment for everyone,”said Lin Li-hsiung, Assistant Chief Engineer of Water Resources Bureau, Taichung City Government.

Pindy says she plans to invite immigrants from other countries to join her group, so that she can improve how foreigners from all over the world are seen in Taiwan.
