The International Monetary Fund proposed a $50 billion plan aimed at a quicker end to the Covid-19 pandemic, saying it could ultimately generate returns of $9 trillion for the global economy due to a faster resumption of economic activity.

The IMF set a target of vaccinating at least 40% of the global population by the end of the year and at least 60% by June 2022. Nearly half of the population in the US and 55% in the UK have received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine. Less than 2% of Africa’s population had been vaccinated at the end of April.

“No country can return to normalcy until all countries can defeat the pandemic,” the IMF said in a report entitled “A Proposal to End the Covid-19 Pandemic.”

To achieve this, the Fund said a global effort to invest $50 billion is needed to boost the global vaccinations. The amount would be used to raise the COVAX vaccine coverage to 30% of the globe, procuring additional tests, and expanding vaccine manufacturing. COVAX is an international partnership established to ensure equitable distribution of Covid-19 vaccines around the world.

The estimate of $50 billion would include $35 billion from public, private and multilateral donors, with the remainder coming from national governments, potentially supported by agencies created by several development banks.
