Jacob: Investors earn a return from dividends on stocks and interest on bonds held in the fund’s portfolio.

Jacob: Of course, they can. Or they can choose to receive a check for distributions. In some cases where the fund sells securities that increase in price, the fund passes on the capital gain to investors in a distribution.
