Hong Kong’s stock market surged Wednesday after local media reported that Chief Executive Carrie Lam plans to formally rescind a controversial extradition bill.

Kevin Leung, executive director of investment strategy at Haitong International Securities, expressed his feelings about the situation: “For those hit worst by the protests, like retailers and property developers, withdrawal of the extradition bill could partly warm sentiments … but still, this is far from solving all of the problems. I also think the government needs to issue more concrete measures to help small and medium-sized businesses to restore overall confidence.”
