After dozens of protesters stormed and vandalized Hong Kong’s legislature, the city is now divided on whether the demonstrators have gone too far in their quest to make their voices heard.

On Monday in Hong Kong, pro-democracy protesters who had been opposing a bill that would allow suspected criminals to be extradited to China once again took to the streets. The demonstration took place as the city commemorates the 22nd anniversary of its handover from British to Chinese rule.

The march was peaceful until a small group of activists hacked through the thick glass of the legislative building and stormed the premises.

Hong Kong’s Chief Executive, Carrie Lam, called a press conference at 4 a.m. on Tuesday morning to denounce the “extreme use of violence and vandalism” by protesters.

Pan-democracy lawmaker, Claudia Mo, said that while Hong Kong’s pan-democratic politicians did not approve of the ransacking, Lam was twisting Monday’s events to cast the protesters in a bad light.
