Five imprisoned leaders of the Hong Kong democracy movement have been nominated for the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize. They are media mogul Jimmy Lai, student activist Joshua Wong, journalist Gwyneth Ho, barrister Chow Hang-tung and former union leader Lee Cheuk-yan.
五名被關押的香港民主運動領導人獲提名為2022年諾貝爾和平獎候選人。他們是媒體大亨黎智英、學運領袖黃之鋒、記者何桂藍、律師鄒幸彤、前香港工運領袖李卓人。

These figures have been chosen by 15 academics from 10 different countries to embody various groups of people that have been active in resisting the crackdown on freedom and civil society in Hong Kong.

“The nominees have chosen to be prisoners of conscience rather than to accept the crushing of human rights and the affront to human dignity that a new National Security Law has visited upon Hong Kong,” wrote the professors in the nomination letter.

China scholar and University of California Riverside professor Perry Link, who organized the nomination letter, said the activists deserve the prize because they stood their ground even though each of them could have fled or simply remained hushed. “They willingly chose jail. And that’s a pretty remarkable sacrifice,” said Link.

“The principles that they act upon undergird human rights and human dignity everywhere, and their voices emerge at a time when human rights and dignity are coming under ever greater pressure around the world,” the scholars said.

The crusaders for the Hong Kong democracy movement are compared to other renowned dissidents and oppressed freedom fighters who have won the prize, including Hitler critic Carl von Ossietzky (1935), Soviet dissident Andrei Sakharov (1975), Polish politician Lech Walesa (1983) and Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo (2010).

The academics said if the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to the Hong Kong prisoners of conscience in October, it would “underscore the highest moral aspirations of humanity.”
