Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai was arrested on Monday morning at his residence for alleged collusion with foreign forces in the most high-profile enforcement of China’s national security law since it was imposed by Beijing.

Bruce Lui, a senior lecturer in Hong Kong Baptist University’s journalism department, said authorities are making an example of Apple Daily under the new law.

“They’re used as an example to terrify others ... of what can happen if you don’t obey or if you go too far,” Lui said. “I think other media may make a judgment to censor themselves.”

After the new national security law was enforced in Hong Kong, Lai and his newspaper denounced the move, saying it was a “death knell” in an interview with BBC in June.
