The job market has been turbulent, which, obviously, directly impacts the income of the overall labor force. From day-to-day it can be a struggle to survive, let alone live the life we want.

According to a job search website survey last year, only 36% of workers said that they can live within their means; 25% of workers noted that their income is “not enough to make ends meet.”

31-year-old Selena was once a spendthrift with no concept of financial management or savings. Every month’s salary was gone as fast as it came.

After going abroad, she realized that she didn’t have enough savings to extend her stay and work in the United States. This experience made her aware that, “If you aren’t economically independent, you will miss out on many opportunities.”

Selena believes that financial management should be simple, and that young professionals can break bad habits and stick with a good financial plan for the long run. Here are her four painless ways to save money: force yourself to save, develop a habit of tracking your spending, use cash as much as possible and only use credit cards with cash rewards.

“The first adjustment is delaying pleasure. Only when we make or save extra money can we spend it on some high-priced items. The second rule is to set financial goals so that one’s actions and decisions are consistent with the ultimate goal. Finally, after saving some money, invest in assets and use the income from the investments to purchase what you need.”

Selena wishes to achieve financial freedom by the age of 35. However, she has never used financial management as a tool to get rich. On the contrary, she thinks that financial management is more like a lifestyle. “Have a plan when spending money and be willing to save it!” she says.
期許自己能在35歲這年達成財務自由，Selena一直以來不把理財當作致富的工具，反之認為理財更像是一種生活態度：「花錢花得有計畫，存錢存的很甘願！」

Such autonomy will give rise to self-confidence and freedom. “It is absolutely necessary that you can rely on yourself,” Selena cautions women of her generation, as she exudes an air of confidence and belief in herself.
