The photo shows a pack of dogs, with their sled in tow, trudging towards a distant mountain range in northwest Greenland. They were traveling over what is usually a solid stretch of ice; however, the ice’s surface had melted, making it appear as if they were running on water.

This month, temperatures in northwestern Greenland have reached all-time highs, causing the ice sheet to melt at unusual rates.

On the day that Olsen took the famous shot, Greenland lost 2 billion tons of the ice sheet, and temperatures were 12 degrees Celsius above average in some areas.

William Colgan, senior researcher at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland, says a high-pressure system lodged over Greenland, as well as low cloud cover and snowfall, has caused the ice sheet to melt early.

A study published in April found that the melting of the Greenland ice sheet has caused the sea level to rise more than a half-inch since 1972, making it the largest contributor of new water to the ocean every year.
