Google has launched a new augmented reality (AR) software development kit for Android smartphones, as it competes with Apple for a place in the hot new app market.

The software, which is called ARCore, will allow app developers to have digital images and characters superimposed onto real world images on the phone screen.

ARCore will first be made available on 100 million Android phones in the coming months, including Samsung’s Galaxy S8 and Google’s own Pixel phone, with support from Huawei, LG and Asus on the way.

For now, the software is still in a limited developer preview, and Google has not yet announced a date for a broad release.
