Google CEO Sundar Pichai has confirmed the company’s leaked plans to create a censored search app for the Chinese market.

On stage at Wired’s 25th anniversary summit in San Francisco, Pichai openly discussed “Project Dragonfly”.

He said the plan, which was still in an exploratory stage, has built an app that would block search results for queries that the Chinese government considers sensitive, such as “human rights” and “student protest”.

Pichai said on Monday that, if back in operation in China, Google would be able to provide users with better information than what is available now on subjects like cancer.
