The Earth’s average temperature will reach 1.5℃ above pre-industrial levels in the early 2030s, 10 years earlier than previously projected, according to a report released on August 9 by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
聯合國「政府間氣候變化專門委員會」（IPCC）9日公布報告指出，地球平均溫度最快在2030年就會升到比工業化前水準高出攝氏1.5度，比先前預測的時間點還要提早10年。

The UN’s climate panel warns that once this threshold is breached, there will be an irreversible change in the global climate system. Extreme weather events such as heatwaves, droughts, floods and hurricanes will become more severe and frequent, bringing about massive disasters.

The IPCC said that without drastic moves to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the goal to limit global warming to 1.5℃ or even 2℃ above pre-industrial levels will be unattainable in the next two decades.

Under the 2015 Paris Agreement, nearly 200 countries agreed to stop global warming from coming close to 2℃ above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit it to 1.5°C. It was previously estimated that the target would most likely be reached by around 2040.

Experts say that this report is a wake-up call for governments to reduce carbon emissions. The report points out that under all scenarios examined, global warming will reach at least 1.5℃. Even with the most aggressive low-emissions plans, global warming is expected to reach 1.5℃ in the 2030s, and the threshold will be breached by mid-century.

This report is expected to be the key scientific reference at the upcoming UN climate talks, known as COP26, to be held in Glasgow, UK in early November. Participating countries are expected to step up their commitments to reduce carbon emissions in accordance with the Paris Agreement to keep global warming within 1.5℃.
