Giant, the world’s largest producer of bicycles, will reduce reliance on its China manufacturing base and is setting up a new manufacturing hub in Europe.

According to CNA, the chairwoman of Giant, Bonnie Tu (杜綉珍), said that at the beginning, they thought their six factories in China could supply the world, but localization is an emerging trend in bicycle manufacturing.
根據中央社報導，巨大集團董事長杜綉珍表示，最初他們認為中國的6個廠房能供應全球，但是「在地化」會是單車生產的新趨勢。

To handle the growing market of electric bikes, localization seems to be one of the best solutions, since tariffs on Chinese-made e-bikes are increasing as the China-U.S. trade war heats up and new tariffs from the European Union come into force.

Giant announced that they will invest NT$2.201 billion to establish a new European distribution center in the Netherlands and Hungary.

The new factory will decrease transport costs and taxes, reported Bike Europe.

Bonnie Tu said that setting up manufacturing centers is for the company’s long-term development. She also mentioned that the company had no intention to relocate manufacturing to Southeast Asia to save on labor costs.
杜綉珍說，設立新廠區是為公司長遠發展考量。她也提到，捷安特無意為了減少勞工成本將廠區移到東南亞。

According to Bike Europe, Giant currently sells more than 400,000 bikes annually in Europe, including both traditional bicycles and E-bikes.
