French President Emmanuel Macron is to forgo his future pension as a former head of state, as strikes over pension reforms continue to hit transport networks across France.

With the strikes persisting into the third week and disruption to rail and bus services delaying families going home to celebrate Christmas, Macron, who celebrated his 42nd birthday on Saturday, made the symbolic gesture to become the first president in more than 50 years to renounce the automatic pension of €6,220 per month for life, scheduled by law for the end of his term.

Mr. Macron will also waive his right to sit on the Constitutional Council, where former presidents are members for life and receive a monthly allowance of €13,500.
