Speaking via video link to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger suggested Ukraine should cede the territories already annexed by Russia before the war began to bring about peace.

The status quo ante, a Latin phrase meaning how things were before, refers to the previous situation when Crimea and large swathes of the eastern Donbas region were seized by Russia and Russian-backed separatists in 2014. Ukrainian forces had been fighting for eight years to regain control of the two regions before the latest conflict erupted.
