A report from the Ministry of Health and Welfare on Sept. 19 stated that this tragic incident was caused by pesticide in dumplings all 12 had eaten.

The first victim was an 83-year-old woman named Tseng from Binmao Village.

She went to Mackay Memorial Hospital in Taitung on September 17, feeling sick and having a strange smell.

Because of this, doctors thought she had food poisoning.

Sadly, she later died, but her family said her death was not because of bad food.

After her death, about 30 friends and family came to Tseng’s house. They ate leftover food from her kitchen, including the millet dumplings she made.

Soon after, some of them got very sick. Two more people died, and nine others needed to go to the hospital for emergency care.

The results showed that all the ingredients, especially the millet, contained the pesticide Terbufos.
