Every living thing requires food to survive, and a food chain describes who eats whom.
每個生物都需要食物才能生存下去，而食物鏈是表示物種之間「吃」與「被吃」的關係。

Organisms in a food chain are divided into three different groups: producers, consumers, and decomposers.
食物鏈中的生物分為三個不同的類別：生產者、消費者與分解者。

Producers are the first group in a food chain. They make their own food using sunlight, carbon dioxide and water, and they are either plants or single-celled organisms.
生產者是食物鏈中的第一層。牠們會利用陽光、二氧化碳與水自行製造食物，通常是植物或單細胞生物。

Consumers are next after producers. There can be several levels of consumers in a food chain, and they eat the producers or other consumers.
生產者之後就是消費者。食物鏈中存在不同層級的消費者，他們會吃生產者或其它消費者。

Decomposers, such as fungi and bacteria, are the last group, and they complete the cycle of life.
真菌與細菌等分解者是最後一類，牠們使生命循環得以完整。

They eat dead plants and animals, breaking down the bodies so that the nutrients can return back into the soil and a new food chain can begin.
牠們吃下死亡的植物與動物，將屍體分解，這樣一來養分便能回歸土壤，而新的食物鏈也得以展開。

An example of a food chain would start with grass producing its own food from sunlight.

A rabbit would eat the grass, and then the rabbit would be eaten by a fox.
兔子會把草吃掉，然後狐狸再吃掉兔子。
