Mindy and John are talking about a big fire they saw on the news.
Mindy: Hey John, did you see the news about that big fire yesterday? It was so scary.
John: Yeah, I saw it. Fires can be really dangerous, especially when people don’t know how to escape.
set on fire放火/catch fire著火put out fire滅火fire extinguisher滅火器
Mindy: I always thought running upstairs was safer. Is that true?
John: Actually, no. Smoke goes up very fast—much faster than people can move. If the stairs are safe, you should go down, not up.
smoke(n.)煙
Mindy: What if there’s smoke in the stairs?
what if…?
John: Then don’t use them. Move to another hallway or room and close the door.
Mindy: Some people say it’s safe to hide in the bathroom because there’s water.
John: That’s a common myth. Bathroom doors can melt, smoke can get in easily, and there are usually no windows. It’s not a good place to stay.
myth(n.)錯誤觀念、誤解、傳說melt(v.)熔化
Mindy: Oh wow. And what about wet towels? I heard they help you breathe in a fire.
breathe(v.)呼吸breathe in吸氣/breathe out呼氣breath(n.)
John: Not really. Wet towels don’t stop dangerous gases. It’s better to escape quickly instead of looking for one.
instead of…
Mindy: Okay… but what if I really can’t get out?
John: Then choose a room with a window. Close the door, block the gaps with clothes, and call 119. You can also wave something out the window so rescuers can see you.
block(v.)阻塞、封鎖rescuer(n.)救援人員/rescue(v.)救援
Mindy: Got it. And the elevator?
John: Never use it during a fire. But if you’re already inside when the fire starts, stay calm. Don’t try to open the door — just press the emergency button for help.
press/push the button按按鈕emergency(n.)
Mindy: Thanks, John. I didn’t know there were so many wrong ideas about fire safety.
John: No problem. Just remember: “small fire — escape fast; lots of smoke — stay in a room, close the door, and wait for help.”
