In another unusual development, Marin will lead a five-party, center-left coalition alongside four other parties that are all headed by women — three of whom are in their early 30s.

Her own background also breaks the mold: she comes from a low-income home and was the first in her family to earn a university degree. But it’s not just that — Marin was raised by her mother and her mother’s female partner, and she has described facing discrimination in Finland due to her background.

With strikes continuing as she took office and populist nationalism looming over Finland’s politics, it remains to be seen whether Ms. Marin’s rise will help settle the labor unrest and stem the rising tide of right-wing nationalistic tendencies which are not only evident in Finland but across much of Europe.
