The Federal Reserve ramped up its expectations for economic growth and continued to project near-zero interest rates, at least through 2023, despite an expected surge of inflation.

The Fed forecast that GDP growth will likely come in at 6.5% this year, up from the 4.2% it had predicted in December.
forecast(v.)預測=predict
“The recovery has been faster than we expected,” Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said after a two-day policy meeting. “Part of that just is it’s very hard to predict, given we’ve never seen an event like this. But part of it is just the strength of the fiscal response, which I think will look good over the years.”
given(prep.)考慮到;有鑑於fiscal(adj.)
The outlook for recovery in the jobs markets has also brightened. The Fed projected the unemployment rate to fall to 4.5% from its current 6.2% level.

The Fed has played down the risk from inflation. While inflation is expected to jump to 2.4% this year, Powell said that number is viewed as a temporary surge which, as long as it helps to achieve maximum employment, will not change the Fed’s policy.
“I would note that a transitory rise in inflation above 2%, as seems likely to occur this year, would not meet this standard,” Powell said.

In recent years, inflation has consistently fallen short of the Fed’s 2% target. Prices of some goods are likely to jump this year, especially when compared with the early months of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Markets have grown skittish lately about worries that inflation pressures may be posing a bigger danger than the Fed thinks.
