Taiwan’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says that an online rumor about soy milk being full of artificial preservatives is not true.
台灣食藥署證實一個關於豆漿中含有大量防腐劑的網路傳聞不是真的。

Last week, the FDA said that soy milk companies don’t add any man-made preservatives to their products.

This is because the way they make soy milk kills all the germs that make you sick.

The FDA explained that soy milk is produced at very hot or very cold temperatures, which is bad for germs.

One way is to cool the soy milk to temperatures below 7ºC, which keeps them fresh for just under a fortnight.

The other way is to pasteurize it, which means heating it for a certain amount of time so that all germs die.

Soy milk makers also sterilize their packaging.

Making soy milk this way means that it can last for up to six months and you can still drink it.

Officials said that the only thing people need to do is pay attention to the best-before date on the side of the packaging and whether the packaging and labelling has been damaged.

They added that soy bean milk and other soy products including tofu, bean curd, and tofu skins, have lots of minerals and nutrients, and are an important part of a healthy diet.
