A July 19 software update by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike was responsible for causing “one of the largest IT failures in history,” affecting Microsoft cloud-based services worldwide.

According to a report by The Guardian, businesses across many industries felt the effects of the technology outage — flights were grounded, health services were disrupted, payment systems crashed and access to Microsoft services was blocked.

In an official statement, CrowdStrike said that the cause of the outage was “a faulty piece of code” in a software update to Falcon Sensor, the company’s flagship cloud-based cybersecurity platform.
