Facebook has unveiled its cryptocurrency project, called Libra, which is expected to fundamentally change global financial and payment systems.

Libra is described as a new global currency powered by blockchain technology. The digital wallet for Libra will be available in Messenger, WhatsApp and as a standalone app. The social media giant plans to launch the project in 2020.

Facebook and 28 partners, including MasterCard, Visa, Stripe, Kiva and PayPal, have already released a prototype of Libra as an open source code. Developers can use the prototype to weave it into apps, services or businesses ahead of Libra’s rollout as a global digital currency next year.

According to Japan Today, over a billion people worldwide remain “unbanked”. With Libra, they can gain access to online commerce and financial services.

Libra Association head of policy and communications, Dante Disparte, said “we believe if you give people access to money and opportunity at the lowest cost, the way the internet itself did in the past with information, you can create a lot more stability than we have had up until now.”

Facebook’s Libra has already drawn a lot of attention from analysts, and most of them are maintaining a positive attitude toward it, claiming that Facebook’s move has the potential to open the door for cryptocurrency to a wider public.
