Facebook has once again taken the issue of false Instagram likes to court by suing Russia-based Nakrutka, a fake engagement service provider, this year.

According to the social media giant, Nakrutka and its developer Nikolay Holper deployed a network of robots and automation software to provide fake likes, comments and followers on Instagram.

Interestingly, Nakrutka lists products ranging from “Cheat publication saves (bookmarks)” to “Bots with avatars (followers)” with a cost of US$0.01 to US$0.5 per 1,000 units, and these features are now still on its website.

Furthermore, Facebook’s report has revealed instances of these violations; for example, a fresh new user who received 10,000 likes within minutes after posting a photo of a goat to an Instagram account with zero followers.

“We previously disabled accounts associated with Holper and his service, and formally warned him that he was in violation of our Terms,” said Facebook.

Now the owner of Instagram is seeking a permanent injunction from Holper’s interacting with Facebook and Instagram, as well as compensatory and punitive damages.

In fact, Facebook has filed a number of similar lawsuits against such developers. Earlier this year, the Spain-based MGP25 Cyberint Services was ordered by court to stop its false engagement operations on Instagram, while Social Media Series Limited in New Zealand was accused of violating cybersecurity laws by selling artificial posts and accounts.

Perhaps, amid the bloody battles between the social media and the false engagement service providers, one should reflect that the true meaning of a view or a like is actually based on a genuine follower, not on a distant machine that satisfies ones’ vanity.
