Facebook has started to use its facial recognition AI to notify users when their photos are uploaded to the social media site even when they are not tagged in the pictures.

The new feature has been rolled out to Facebook’s more than 2 billion users, but is not available in Canada and the European Union because of stricter privacy laws in those regions.

The feature is powered by the same facial recognition technology that Facebook has used to suggest friends whom users may want to tag in photos.

This means hundreds of billions of photos are stored on the company’s servers to provide ample data to train machine-learning algorithms to recognize different faces.

Fortunately, privacy-conscious users can choose not to be subject to Facebook’s facial recognition capabilities by opting out in the Timeline and Tagging section of Settings.
