NASA announced that the number of planets known beyond our solar system, known as exoplanets, has exceeded 5,000.

The more than 5,000 confirmed exoplanets can be classified into four major categories: small, rocky worlds that resemble Earth, gas giants many times the size of Jupiter, super-Earths, which are possibly rocky worlds bigger than the Earth, as well as mini-Neptunes, smaller versions of our solar system’s Neptune.

Jessie Christiansen, science lead of the NASA Exoplanet Archive, said that the new batch includes two Earth-sized planets. However, with a temperature of around 327°C, they are more like “hot rocks,” not habitable planets.

Christiansen said among the more than 5,000 exoplanets that astronomers have discovered so far, 4,900 are situated within a few thousand light years from us.

“And think about the fact that we are 30,000 light years from the center of the galaxy ... that means there are many more planets in our galaxy we haven’t found yet, as many as 100 billion to 200 billion. It’s mind-blowing,” she said.

Christiansen recalled that in the early 2000s, when she was still a graduate student, there were merely 100 known exoplanets.
