As we get deep into the core of the Taipei City election, we can see that all three candidates still have some fight left in them.
core(n.) 核心;關鍵;最重要的部分candidate(n.)候選人
There has been a rumor that Yao Wen-chih does not really expect to win. His candidacy has already caused a stir early in the campaign season, and he has felt the need to address the matter to the media.
candidacy(n.)候選人資格(身份)cause a stir引起騷動=create a sircampaign(n.)(政治、商業、軍事)活動election campaign競選活動
“It’s clear that this is still a face-off between all three parties. Anyone who openly says that I am a “fake candidate” will find themselves in a lawsuit. I’ve been a one-man army, fighting all the way, representing my party and concentrating on municipal issues. I will put it all on the line: If I don’t win, I will withdraw from politics. How does that sound? Does it sound like I’m faking?”
face-off(n.)對峙;對抗lawsuit(n.)訴訟withdraw from~從…撤退;退出fake(adj.)
Clara Zhou believes that the election is trending very differently this time around.
trend(n.)
At present, it seems that Ko Wen-je is leading the polls, but Yao is slowly catching up.
poll(n.)民調
However, it remains to be seen which strategic choices the three candidates will make further down the line, and how the KMT and DPP camps will rally support for their candidates.
但最後三位候選人會做出什麼選擇,藍綠基本盤又會如何凝聚,都尚待觀察;
it remains to be seen…仍待觀察…strategic(adj.)策略性的;策略的down the line=down the road=in the futurerally(v.)
Zhou explains that to win the election, Yao should be committed to pulling in as many DPP votes as possible so that he can overtake Ko.
be committed to~投入;致力於as many…as possible盡可能多一點…so that…如此一來;為了…=in order that…overtake(v.)超越
As for candidate Ding Shou-zhong, he is a senior political figure and has chosen more subtle methods during his campaign. If he can expose Ko’s narrative of cross-strait harmony as being a fallacy, the majority of the KMT votes could swing his way.
as for~至於…expose(v.)揭發;揭露narrative(n.)敘述;故事;論述fallacy(n.)謬論
Zhou sees Ko as a politician who is good at lying but poor at leading. His strategy has been to utilize his “cyber army” to set smoke screens and dodge scandals. Zhou thinks that this is how he has repeatedly escaped public scrutiny.
strategy(n.)策略utilize(v.)有效利用smokescreens(n.)(用於掩蓋真實意圖的)煙幕dodge(v.)躲避scandal(n.)醜聞;弊案scrutiny(n.)
However, Zhou does not think that his “cyber army” will materialize in the voting booths in any large number. The real question that remains is how Ko will perform in the debate.
周玉蔻也不認為網軍聲量可以實質化為選票,待看接近選舉時的柯文哲的辯論表現會如何;
cyber army網軍=cyber warriorsmaterialize(v.)
Zhou also believes that the current distribution of seats in the Taipei City Council will also have an impact on the mayoral election.
distribution(n.)分配have an impact on~對…
The parties that have emerged this year, such as the New Power Party, will influence the “light green”, non-partisan or swing voters, and is something that should not be underestimated.
emerge(v.)浮現;嶄露頭角non-partisan(adj.) 低估overestimate(v.)高估
In the end, Zhou says that despite having worked as a journalist for many years, she finds that the results of elections are always surprising and can change at the drop of a hat. Perhaps this is why some voters are always obsessed with the drama of it all.
despite(prep.)儘管=in spite ofat the drop of a hat立刻;馬上;不加思索地;毫不猶豫地immediately(adv.)立刻;馬上be obsessed with 著迷~
