On February 15, the first ever AI+Education Summit was held at Stanford University to discuss the utilization of artificial intelligence, including chatbots like ChatGPT, in “human learning.”

The advantages and disadvantages of AI were two themes that took center stage at the event.

One of the main advantages of AI was deemed to be its value in supporting teachers through its ability to simulate student inquiries, give feedback on teaching and update professional knowledge.

Additionally, some experts at the summit noted that, like calculators, AI has the potential to automate some aspects of learning which would enable students to “pursue something more creative and ambitious” in their education.

As for the disadvantages, first and foremost, the summit found that chatbots and generative AI does not treat cultural diversity in an appropriate manner, with some of their output being viewed as offensive and unsafe for some learners.
