British and Dutch researchers tested this theory in an experiment, recently published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology.

The dialogue was recorded, and each participant’s foreign language skills were rated by two native Dutch speakers, who were not aware which people had consumed alcohol.

Analyzing the results, the researchers found that those who were slightly intoxicated had significantly better observer-ratings for their Dutch language, specifically better pronunciation and fluency.

The authors also point out that the dose of alcohol tested in the study was low, and that higher levels of consumption might have opposite effects on fluency and can even lead to slurred speech.
