Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has had an established “nuclear-free homeland” policy, which has been working to phase out the country’s nuclear power plants.

However, recent comments by Vice President and DPP presidential candidate Lai Ching-te have caused some to call this commitment into question.
While attending a National Taiwan University forum on May 28, Lai responded to a question about possible power shortages caused by a Chinese blockade of Taiwan by saying that “nuclear reactors might be reactivated in an emergency situation.”

Given the DPP’s well-known nuclear policy as well as Lai’s previous, very vocal anti-nuclear power stance, these comments have become a lightning rod for criticism.

Hung has noted that not only do Lai’s ideas run counter to his party’s views, but Lai’s change of attitude may simply have been made “out of election considerations.”

Meanwhile, other government officials have either reiterated the DPP’s commitment to the “nuclear-free” policy or avoided answering questions on the topic altogether.

Given KMT presidential candidate Hou Yu-ih’s openness to nuclear power options in Taiwan, though, this may continue to be a contested election topic.
