President Donald Trump signed a proclamation on March 25th, in which he officially recognized Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights, reversing more than half a century of U.S. policy in the Middle East.
美國總統川普於3月25日簽署一份公告,承認以色列擁有戈蘭高地主權,反轉了美國超過半世紀以來對中東的政策。

The U.S. is the first country to recognize the Golan Heights, a large area in the northern part of Israel, as a legitimate part of Israel’s territory. The rest of the international community, in fact, regards the area as being occupied by the Israelis.

Trump believes that his decision will cement the Jewish state’s ability to defend itself from regional threats. What’s more, this will likely give Netanyahu a boost ahead of the upcoming Israeli elections. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was standing alongside when Trump announced the surprising move.

Trump’s move has provoked outrage in the Middle East. Syria and neighboring Lebanon condemned the move, with the former accusing Trump of launching “a blatant attack on its sovereignty”.

Syria’s foreign ministry said Trump’s strategy represented the “highest level of disrespect for international legitimacy” and showed that Washington was “the main enemy” of Arab countries.
