The Dominican Republic has ditched relations with Taipei and switched diplomatic recognition to Beijing.
多明尼加共和國結束與台灣的外交關係，宣布與中國建交。

The decision was announced on May 1 following a meeting between Dominican Chancellor Miguel Vargas and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
多明尼加外交部長瓦爾加斯和中國外交部長王毅於5月1日會面後，宣布與台斷交的決定。
“Establishing diplomatic ties with Beijing means unprecedented huge potential opportunities for the Dominican Republic’s development,” Wang said.
王毅表示與北京建交，意味著為多明尼加自身發展帶來前所未有的巨大機遇。

The diplomatic switch followed a pledge by China to pay the Dominican Republic over $US3.1 billion in loans (NT$92 billion). This included $400 million for a new freeway, $1.6 billion for infrastructure projects and $300 million for a new natural gas power plant.

This is not the first time China has used dollar diplomacy to buy out Taiwan’s allies. In 2016, it offered US$140 million in aid to Sao Tome and Principe. However, it has since failed to follow through on the aid package.
