More precisely, a study published in the medical journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings suggests that owning a dog may promote heart health.

The research, undertaken in 2013, involved 1,769 residents of Brno, Czech Republic, all between the ages of 25 and 64. They were requested to provide information on various health indices, including their BMI, blood pressure, and cholesterol and blood sugar levels, as well as details about their dietary and other habits.

It was noted that none of the subjects in the study had any history of heart disease. 42% of the subjects owned pets; 24% had dogs, while 17.9% owned another type of animal. Follow-up evaluations have been scheduled to take place every five years until 2030.

The researchers discovered that pet owners were generally more physically active than those who did not own pets. They also had healthier diets as well as better blood sugar levels.
But when the various subcategories of pet owners were examined, it was revealed that dog ownership was most beneficial in terms of cardiovascular health, regardless of the subject’s age, sex or education level.

The research team did not conclude that simply owning a dog by itself guarantees freedom from cardiovascular disease.

Instead, they found that the physical activity accompanying dog ownership may offset the effects of certain bad habits. Emotional benefits may enter the picture as well.
