Shawn and Mel are friends. They are talking about how people in Taiwan prepare for typhoons.
prepare for…為~做準備be well-prepared for…
Shawn: I saw some people preparing for tomorrow’s storm. Does taping windows before a typhoon actually work?
Mel: Oh! It’s interesting that you brought that up. Taiwan’s government just said taping windows doesn’t help.
Shawn: I thought it might not. So why do so many people do it?
Mel: I guess they just think taping the glass makes the window stronger. But the government did tests and found that taping windows actually makes them weaker.
test(n.)測試、測驗take a test做測試=do a testweak(adj.)
Shawn: Crazy! It’s probably better to just upgrade the windows and window frames, right?
upgrade(v.)升級、提高品質frame(n.)
Mel: Right! Also, the government said people can add protective film to window glass to make windows safer during a typhoon.
Shawn: That makes sense. The film will stop small pieces of glass from hurting people if the window gets broken.
make sense使有道理stop A from …
Mel: Yep. I’m going to buy some film online for my parents. It will keep their house safer and save them time on taping windows.
