More than 8 metric tons of hairy crabs contaminated with dioxin have been sold on the market, the Food and Drug Administration announced last Friday.

The FDA said Ciaoaibo International Enterprises and Youfong Enterprises imported nearly 15 metric tons of Chinese mitten crabs, also known as hairy crabs, on Oct. 14.

The FDA found that the importers had sold around 8.3 metric tons of the crabs before obtaining permission to do so.

The test results, released on Oct. 23, showed excessive amounts of dioxin and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyl (DL-PCB) in the crabs, the agency said in a statement.

“Dioxin is a colorless and odorless fat-soluble substance. After entering the human body, it is mostly stored in fat and internal organs, with a half-life of up to 7 years,” said Yan Tsung-hai, a chief physician of the Division of Nephrology and the Director of the Poison Center of Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Yan suggests that people who have consumed dioxin-tainted foods should eat high-fiber, high-pectin foods, such as pineapples, apples, oatmeal, kelp, bananas, and okra, to absorb the oil and remove the dioxin from the body.
