Taiwan’s Deputy Health Minister Lin Ching-yi issued a warning on Nov. 19 about the safety of illegally imported fermented bean curd products from China.

This warning came after local media discovered a viral trend of social media users eating a Chinese food called “moldy bean curd.”

Despite this sudden popularity, Lin described the food as a “‘three noes’ item,” meaning varieties of the bean curd “carry no maker’s name, authorization mark or approval label.”

According to CNA News, local media reports have said these fermented bean curd products are mostly “homemade or smuggled from China into Taiwan for sale.”
