Not long-ago Taiwan Labor Front and rental agency 591.com released a study on the purchasing power of someone living on Taiwan’s basic income of NT$22,000 a month.

Using the universal principle that people only spend 30% of their salary on rent, the study found that 22K tenants in Taipei would only be able to afford a tiny NT$6600 apartment — more likely than not, an illegal structure measuring no more than a paltry 33m2 (10 ping).

A few years ago, a group of friends tried to solve this problem by creating a communal living area out of a 9-story building in Taipei.

They called their experience the 9 Floor Space, and its success led the group to consider the possibilities that “co-living spaces” could offer Taiwan’s cash-strapped career-starters.

Chen Wen-zhe was one such career-starter. Having lived all over Taiwan, he moved to the capital after completing his postgraduate studies and found a place at the 9 Floor Space.

For him, being able to live together with various people from different professions and backgrounds was stimulating.

At the same time, he also began to work for the 9 Floor Space, which gave him an even deeper understanding of the concept behind co-living spaces.

According to Chen, the system is particularly good for Taiwan’s growing number of people with slash careers. They often have to move around for work, so the 9 Floor Space is an ideal solution for them.

“What’s more, as co-living spaces become more popular, tenants get more and more of an opportunity to interact with lots of different people.” He beams. “It’s a really different day-to-day experience to the way people normally live.”

9 Floor Space says that it’s their goal to replace “I” with “we”, so that roommates can build a network of support and exchange that they can rely on.

In the future, the group plans to breathe life into more traditional apartment blocks by turning them into communal living spaces, this time with more space dedicated to shared kitchen spaces. “It creates more of an opportunity for people to come together, and will allow residents to forge deeper connections with their roommates and community,” explains Chen.
