Clothes That Can Grow with Your Child
Each parent knows what it’s like to buy new clothes for their child, only to find they’ve already outgrown the clothes before the second wash.
only to RV 結果卻…;不料卻…outgrow(v.)
However, this may not be the problem any more as a young inventor has designed clothes that grow with your child.
Ryan Yasin, a London-based designer with a degree in aeronautical engineering, invented a line of children’s clothing that expands to fit a child as it grows from three months to three years old.
expand(v.)(尺寸、數量) 擴大;增加
The clothing is made from distinctive lightweight fabric which is durable, waterproof, and recyclable material.
distinctive(adj.)獨特的durable(adj.)持久的、耐用的recyclable(adj.)
The overlapping, permanent pleats allow the clothes to stretch outward in different directions.
Named Petit Pli, the innovative clothing line recently won the UK James Dyson Award.
innovative(adj.)創新的
Yasin, who had enrolled at London’s Royal College of Art after deciding he wanted to go into fashion, was inspired to create the clothing after being frustrated by how quickly his baby niece and nephew outgrew garments he bought for them.
inspired(adj.)
He also realized that the clothing industry places a strain on the environment through waste, water consumption and carbon emissions.
place a strain on~對…
Even then, clothes may only be worn briefly before being tossed.
brief(adj.)
Yasin’s engineering background led him to devise garments with the so-called negative Poisson’s ratio.
devise(v.)
When stretched, materials that have this ratio become thicker and can expand in two directions simultaneously.
simultaneously(adv.)同時間=at the same time
The phenomenon is already in use in stents and biomedical implants.
stent(n.)
While Petit Pli is not available for purchase yet, Yasin plans to use his £2,000 prize money to put the clothes into production.
purchase(n.)購買
He is currently raising additional funds and discussing with experts about ethical and sustainable ways to manufacture the clothes.
raise funds 籌募資金ethical(adj.)道德的sustainable(adj.)永續的
The inventor says that he hopes the first clothing will go on sale in the UK within months.
