A coalition of civil groups presented a petition bearing almost 30,000 signatures to the Central Election Commission (CEC) on December 26, in a bid to recall Kaohsiung Mayor Han Kuo-yu.

As of November, the recall coalition managed to collect nearly 30,000 signatures, exceeding the threshold of 22,814, or approximately 1% of the city’s 2.28 million eligible voters.

Once the CEC has verified their petition, the coalition will proceed to the second phase; they will be required to collect at least 228,134 signatures, or the support of 10% of the city’s electorate.

“Recalls are rare in Taiwan because the level of difficulty is very high, especially in southern Taiwan,” said Aaron Yin, head of Wecare Kaohsiung, one of the civic groups that is petitioning for Han`s recall.
