However, it is not going to be on the streets of Taipei or Kaohsiung.
In fact, if San Francisco city supervisor Joel Engardio is able to enact his plan, it will be held later this year on the streets of his city’s Sunset District.

In April, Engardio announced that he had been working on making this Sunset Night Market a reality.

According to Engardio, night markets are a community experience that go beyond just food.
For San Francisco, which is currently dealing with problems of widespread crime and homelessness, Engardio believes that “a vibrant night market will foster community, stimulate the local economy” and help change the negative narrative currently affecting the city.

In addition to these goals, Engardio hopes that a Taiwanese-style night market will create both a feeling of joy among city residents as well as a new tourist destination for the city’s visitors to explore.

To make this happen, Engardio has been working with both city departments and merchants to “create a Friday night market with cooking vendors and stalls.”

Due to the organizing stage taking longer than planned, the initial date of September 15 has been pushed back to later in the month.

However, if Engardio’s Sunset Night Market is a success, it will likely become a regular monthly event in 2024.
