肺炎支原體感染
Global concern has been growing over hospitals in northern China and Beijing reporting a surge in the number of children experiencing respiratory illnesses, including pneumonia.

Due to fears that this could be the start of another pandemic, the World Health Organization has already begun gathering “more information on the cases” to determine the level of global response necessary.

In order to better understand the situation, CNN asked Dr. Leana Wen, an emergency physician and George Washington University professor, to explain what is known so far about this potential health crisis.

However, she believes that since these conditions are caused by “known, existing pathogens,” the reported surge in hospital visits is likely due to the recent lifting of COVID-19 preventive measures and restrictions in China rather than a novel illness.
不過,她認為,由於這些疾病都是由「已知的、現有的病原體」引起的,所以通報的醫院就診人數激增很可能是由於中國最近解除新冠肺炎的預防措施和限制,而不是一種新型疾病。

severe(adj.)嚴重的
Wen says that the spike in pediatric pneumonia in China is being linked to an increased number of cases of mycoplasma pneumoniae infections, a common bacterial type of the illness among young adults and children.

Since antibiotics have been effective in treating Chinese patients, Wen agrees with the WHO that — based on current information — travel to and from China should not yet be restricted.

She also recommends that individuals traveling to China should practice proper hygiene and wear masks in crowded, indoor locations, while world governments should prepare to properly address any surges in respiratory illnesses.
