Taiwan could be the first potential target of Chinese military aggression within the next six to 10 years, as Beijing seeks to overtake America’s global leadership role, a top US commander has warned.

Washington’s top military officer in Asia-Pacific, Admiral Philip Davidson told a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing Tuesday that “Taiwan is clearly one of China’s ambitions,” adding that “the threat is manifest during this decade, in fact, in the next six years.”

Davidson also said that China could overtake America’s hegemony in international affairs and assume a world leadership role by 2050.

Davidson, who was in the hearing to defend budget requests for billions of dollars of new weaponry in the Pacific, said the US needs to make the investment in order to fend off Chinese military ambition in the region.
