China’s Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) announced on November 13 that it is about to begin research into sixth-generation (6G) telecommunications technology.

According to state media, representatives from Chinese government ministries and research institutes met last week to discuss plans to establish a national research and development group for 6G technology.

The Ministry of Science and Technology said it is going to set up two units; one will be made up of government departments tasked with promoting 6G research, whereas the other will consist of 37 telecommunications specialists from universities, research institutions, and private corporations.

During the meeting, Wang Xi, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology, acknowledged that research on 6G is in its infancy, with its scope of application and “key indicators” waiting to be defined.

“6G will certainly be a major upgrade in terms of function and performance, including mobile broadband, latency, reliability, power consumption, and coverage,” said Tang Xiongyan, chief scientist of the network technology research institute at China Unicom.

On the other hand, David Skillicorn, a professor in the School of Computing at Queen’s University, dismissed the project as “a marketing concept, not a technology” because there isn’t even a consensus on what the frequency spectrum for 6G will be.
