The 64-year-old was one of the five booksellers from Causeway Bay Books publishing books criticizing China’s leaders. After disappearing in 2015, Lam resurfaced in China, facing false charges. The reopening of the bookstore came a year after he escaped to Taiwan.

“The reopening is very meaningful,” Lam told reporters at the new store in Taipei. “Causeway Bay Books was destroyed by China through violent means. The reopening proves Taiwan is a place with freedom and democracy, and we still have the right to read books,” he added.

While Lam is no longer in China, the Communist Party’s reach is long. On April 20, a man threw red paint at Lam while he was at a cafe. Then, a few days later, a Facebook user posted a death threat. The man who made the post was found to have ties to pro-China groups, including the Chinese Unification Promotion Party (CUPP).

Despite it all, Lam remains fearless. “What is happening now relates to the bookstore itself. China destroyed this bookstore in Hong Kong, and then I rebuilt it in Taiwan, which means we are a resistance,” he said.
儘管發生了這些事,林榮基仍然毫無畏懼,他說:「現在發生的事情與書店本身有關。中國在香港摧毀了這家書店,然後我在台灣重建書店,這代表我們是一股反抗的力量。」
