Taiwanese “bread guru” Wu Pao-chun has found himself at the center of a cross-strait dispute as the opening of his first shop in China sparked accusations that he supported Taiwanese independence.

The bread master was forced to release a statement on Monday, saying that he was born in “Taiwan, China”, and that he was proud of being Chinese. He also declared that he supported the 1992 Consensus.

Wu’s statement came as a shock to pro-independence Taiwanese because his achievements as a baker had previously made him an object of national pride.

To appease angry Taiwanese customers, Wu held a brief news conference in front of his shop in Kaohsiung on Tuesday.

“He’s been under too much pressure and hopes all Taiwanese people can support him,” Han said.
