Cambridge Considers Scrapping Written Exams as Handwriting Becomes a “Lost Art” for Students
Cambridge University is considering scrapping written exams and allowing students to use laptops or iPads instead after tutors complained that students’ handwriting has become increasingly illegible.

Academics say that a growing reliance on laptops in lectures and elsewhere has caused students to lose their handwriting ability.
reliance(n.)
“Fifteen or twenty years ago, students routinely wrote by hand several hours a day, but now they write virtually nothing by hand except exams,” said Sarah Pearsall, a senior lecturer in Cambridge’s history faculty.

“As a faculty, we have been concerned for years about the declining handwriting problem. There has definitely been a downward trend. It is difficult for both the students and the examiners, as it is harder and harder to read these scripts,” she said.

Cambridge has launched a consultation on the issue as part of its digital education strategy after piloting an exam typing scheme in the history and classics departments earlier this year.

Students are asked in an online survey whether they would like the option to type exams, and whether this would have a significant positive effect on their well-being.

Cambridge’s move comes after the Harvard academic Eric Mazur, known as the founder of the “flipped classroom”, has said that he now encourages students to bring their laptops and smartphones into exams.

According to Mazur, permitting devices in the exam room allows students to look up the information they need and test their creative and analytical skills, rather than their ability to recall information.
