Johnson acknowledged that “many people in Hong Kong fear their way of life … is under threat” since the National People’s Congress proposed the law.

Johnson reiterated that if the Chinese law was introduced, Britain was prepared to make significant changes to its visa system by extending the rights of holders of British National Overseas (BNO) passports to remain for 12 months on a renewable basis.
