Rory and Meredith are university classmates.
Meredith: The class today was really interesting. I didn’t know the ocean was the warmest on record earlier this year.
the adj.-est on record 史上最~
Rory: Yeah. I actually did some extra reading before class to learn what happens to marine animals in warmer ocean waters.
extra(adj.)額外的=additionalfurther(adj.)更進一步的marine(adj.)(n.)
Meredith: Oh yeah? What did you find out?
find out找到、得知discover(v.)發現
Rory: I read that in 2018 and 2019, more than 10 billion snow crabs died during a heatwave in the Bering Sea near Alaska.
Meredith: Wow! That’s so many!
Rory: I know! It’s the highest number of crabs on record to ever die from a heatwave. I guess the warmer waters made them need more food to live, but there wasn’t enough for them to eat. Many of the crabs were also eaten by larger crabs or fish, or they died from disease.
the number of ~數量a number of許多、一些enough(adj.)足狗的disease(n.)疾病=illness
Meredith: I hope this doesn’t happen in other places in the world because of warmer ocean temperatures.
because of由於temperature(n.)溫度、氣溫have a temperature發燒=run a temperature
Rory: I agree. But it’s good that we’re studying science, so we can learn how to help save the world’s oceans.
save(v.)
